BAC 111 for fsx ?

I used to fly Dave Maltby`s BAC 111 in FS9 ---- can this be made to work in FSX ? And if so how please ?

I worked on the BBC soap Eldorado and the first time that I went down to South of Spain I was whisked off to Gatwick in chauffeur car and flown out in a BAC 111 . This is before 9/11 . I sent my license and a note up front and I was invited to ride the jump seat from taxi , throughout the entire flight and through to parking and shut down at Malaga airport . Absolutely fantastic --- the trouble is that since 9/11 we can`t get anywhere near the flight deck now . I was lucky because I flew a lot of jump seat flights before it was stopped . Happy memories .

And so , I would like to be able to fly the BAC 111 in fsx for the above reason and because I prefer the old steam instruments to the glass style panels . The more dials the better for me !!!

wycliffe --- if you read this have you tried the Old Poulteney ?

Hi All,

There will be a pre-exam tomorrow evening from 1730-1930z (1830-2030 local) on Gatwick Tower.

A good amount of traffic is required in order to test the candidate, both a large amount of IFR and a reasonable amount of VFR. Supporting control on KK_APP and London Control would also be appreciated.

No 'funny business' without permission from EGKK_M_TWR.

Good luck to the candidate.

Interesting situation last night. Basically departing from EGKK with no controller and wind at 0/0.

Previously people had been using RW 26L so decide I would use that however by the time I taxied to the holding point someone had lined up on RW 08R! Not a problem as I held and let them take off but I did wonder, how does an ATC decide which runway to use in this situation, roll of the dice?

[Images] EGSS AFCAD

Hello all!

I have completed an AFCAD file for Stansted based on the NATS charts. I created it because I noticed that there were lots of inaccuracies with the FSX default version of Stansted, and there are no up to date AFCAD files on the internet yet (at least until the UK2000 Stansted remake is completed), so I started to create my own using the NATS chart as a template. My new AFCAD for Stansted includes:

Accurate Holding Point Positions, and identifiers
Inner, middle and outer taxiways for aprons A, B, C, and Z.
Updated taxiway positions and layout
Updated building positions (these are basic default ones)
Taxi-signs with new taxiway identifiers
Updated runway numbering to 22/04 from 23/05
Correct parking space identifiers
Accurate apron positions and shapes

Here are some screenshots:

BBC to broadcast from Heathrow Tower

Quote

NATS air traffic control operations at Heathrow Airport will be in the spotlight in a new live TV event broadcast over four nights next month.
Presenter Dan Snow will be in the Heathrow Airport control tower for Airport Live as the BBC gets unrivalled access behind the scenes throughout the airport for the programme due to aired between 20:00-21:00hrs each evening 17–20 June.
Presenters Dallas Campbell and Anita Rani will also be airside, granted unparalleled access to get to grips with the extraordinary science, engineering and logistics that make air travel at one of the world’s busiest airports possible.
There will be a significant focus on the work of NATS’ air traffic controllers who manage around 1,400 aircraft movements each day, including access to the heart of the operation in the visual control room of the tower.
Dan Snow said: “Air travel has become an everyday luxury that we take for granted, but behind the scenes it’s a fascinating web of processes all precisely managed to maintain equilibrium.
“Over four nights we’ll get the chance to see how it all works. We’ll take a look at the complex choreography of air traffic control, learn to fly the world’s largest passenger jet, the A380, and discover how weather plays a crucial role in keeping the whole operation running smoothly. Airport Live will be a thrilling journey through the skies and a definitive account of modern air travel.”
NATS’ General Manager at Heathrow Jon Proudlove said the BBC programme would shine a light on an aspect of air travel that the public does not generally get to see.
“The work of the NATS air traffic controllers at Heathrow is crucial to the efficient running of the airport, ensuring that the runways that we have are used to their maximum capacity safely every day,” said Jon.
“This programme will show some of the challenges we face and the technology that we use to ensure we get the very most we can from what is available.”
The BBC said Airport Live would mark the most complete exploration of Heathrow’s grounds and skies and would feature a mix of live and pre-recorded footage that would explain how an airport worked.
BBC Two will go behind the scenes airside; into the heart of the air traffic control tower; onto the tarmac as a plane is turned around for departure; and into the hub of engineering to watch a service on a plane. Everything and everyone is on a deadline and BBC Two will be there to watch this daily race first hand.

Hi all,
Basically, I am in commuting regularly from Chester to Birmingham and back to Chester which means I spend a lot of time on the M6 from junction 20 (for the M56) and 8 (for the M5). On Friday 31st May I have to stay in Chester later then usual which means I may have to leave Chester at 2200 local time with an ETA of the Junction 8 at about 2300. I was wondering if anyone knows or has an idea of what traffic conditions will be. I am fairly used to traveling at obscure times but I have never driven back on a friday night.

megascenery

Am trying to load megascenery pnw onto my new pc windows 7

originally made for 2004

instructions to make it work in fsx

once loaded go to fsx / settings / scenery library

add scenery --- find pnw which is on my i drive ( second drive ) double click on pnw until the file folders are shown as a list

capeDi e
cape Fi e
etc etc

double click on each file folder

then what shows is

scenery
textures

what I saw on one forum was that you press ok and then click in the white box under scenery and texture and this takes you back to scenery files / add scenery box and repeat the process

if I double click on scenery or textures it will say no items match your search

when i have added all of the file folders the library updates and then when I fly out of tacoma the airport is fine but the scenery is worse than default ---- so what is happening --- it seems that the scenery and textures elements are not copying across into the library

I tried their autoinstaller and it didn`t work so then i found that all my other horizon scenery etc had disappeared from the fsx library and I had to do a restore to the point before I had been trying to install pnw

have sent two e mails to megascenery ------ no reply since the first one was sent two weeks ago

pity because I like flying with megascenery -- just managed to install florida again and it is quite awesome and I am not too bothered about lack of autogen etc -- i happen to like photographic scenery

regards to one and all

VATSIM is proud to announce that Vienna, Austria has been selected as the venue for the next VATSIM Global Conference (W14). Scheduled to take place 9 – 11 May 2014, the organisers have been able to secure one of Vienna’s premier locations for this conference. The main conference activities will be conducted from the comfort and luxury of the Sky Stage and The Multimedia Stage at the prestigious venue “The Stage”. The Stage offers breathtaking panoramic views, modern architecture, excellent transport connections, state of the art technology equipment and much more.
The conference includes a banquet awards-dinner on Saturday night within the relaxing atmosphere of the Luftburg restaurant. The restaurant Luftburg is situated in the green heart of Vienna’s Prater, alongside its interesting and fun attractions in the historic amusement park. The Luftburg is well known for its traditional Austrian food and depending upon the weather, we may optionally dine outside in the beautiful garden area or indoors within the comfortable confines of the restaurant.
The team behind the organising of this great event have been able to obtain special rates at several of the major hotels in the area, all offering their own level of comfort and service with excellent access to the conference venue. Members wishing to attend the VATSIM Vienna (W14) global conference will need to book their own accommodation, booking forms and web links to suggested hotels can be found on the conference website, www.w14.me.

[Images] Oggy Likes Looking At Things

Oggy is the Official Mascot of SWRTS, he is a Cornish Pasty (made by Dave Birch's Boss) and he loves to Look At Things. This weekend Oggy has been Looking At helicopters. To start with Oggy decided to Look At some undercarriage

Oggy also Looked At trying to fly a helicopter...

But then found a bigger helicopter to Look At, he found a Merlin...

He got rather exhausted Looking At a Royal Flight Wessex...

But got very excited when he Looked At firing a gun...

Before deciding that Looking At being a rocket is a lot more exciting...

But eventually decided that German stick grenades were the bestest things for him to Look At

Oggy has travelled the world to represent the SWRTS thanks to an EasyJet pilot he knows who took him to Tel Aviv last week. If you've seen Oggy Looking At Things perhaps you could add some pictures to this thread?

[Pre-exam] THAMES_APP - Friday 17th May 1930z (2030L)

All,

There will be a pre-exam on Friday evening from 1930z (2030L) until 2100z (2200L) on Thames Radar.

Typically the Thames area struggles for IFR inbounds and this is the main thing we need for a successful pre-exam. With that in mind anyone that can fly in (or that can convince some other pilots to fly in) would be appreciated. (I also don't mind people coming in more than once... hint hint )

Thames also handles most EGLC and all EGKB outbounds - though not always for a long time... southbound departures from EGLC (LYD, DVR, SAM) are most useful. Southend traffic to the south (in or out) is also handled by Thames Radar for a short period, so are the London CTR helicopter routes. As always, a bit of ATSOCAS is required - though not too much .

Supporting control is always appreciated.

No special duties without the permission of EGLC_M_APP.

See you there!

New Signature Images Service

I'm looking for people to BETA test my new signature image service - which I have cunningly (or obviously) titled VATSIMdicators!

Here's the marketing spiel I'm using elsewhere to get people interested in testing it - and now I want you to help me!

Quote

Would you be interested in using the most flexible and customisable VATSIM Indicator service available - by using a unique blend of technology and user interaction to allow you to create your own personal indicator images that dynamically update based on pretty much anything you want them to? Want a different indicator for when you are flying than when you are ATC? No problem. Want to show off your favourite screenshots when you fly your favourite aircraft, and tag them in a pretty pink font? No problem! Route details, aircraft info, airline names, airport names, position decoding, and information about every single aspect of your connection is available to use!

Some of the core features include a library of public indicator images, as well as the ability to upload your own images. Dynamic text allows your indicators to display things exactly as you want them, when you want them to display - and in any language you want them!

There's also the ability to advertise for your VA / vACC / RTS by displaying text or image adverts right on your banner - or replacing it entirely with adverts for your vACC or VA when you are offline! Advertise your group flights, ATC events, and exams quickly and easily.

The possibilities truly are endless! Just to give you a taster - in the last few days, testers have uploaded over 30 new background images for you to use in your signature images - and that's just with the handful of testers we have right now! Uploading is done in just a few clicks - no nasty prompts or dialogs. 10 seconds (or less, if you have a fast connection!) and your image is available to use!

We have over 600 different font families available for use, in over 16 million different colours and shades. We have access to a wide variety of data about you, your flight or ATC position, and more is being added every day! Come and get involved!

Feel free to sign up and take a look - http://vi.skenmy.com/ is the URL for the BETA test! Post here with questions or queries, or catch me on TS, or private message, or whatever!

I strongly suggest you read the Help section to get yourself started!

It's key to note that this is 100% definitely a BETA test. Things can, and will, and do, break, and not everything is ready for use yet. Please let me know if you break something so I can fix it - the sheer complexity of this system is something that leaves me unable to test every single aspect myself! Also let me know what you want to see in a signature image service - do you want live maps tracking your flight? Route plans? Animated gifs? Arrival clocks? All of these things are possible (I think...) - I just need to know what people actually want!

The Golden Rule: If you break it, tell me how you did it!

I am interested in controlling Shoreham (EGKA) (local) as I now have time to regularly commit on a weekly basis...and get back in the "hot seat."

I also think it would be good to see a smaller airport manned more often for VFR.

I have set up Euroscope for EGKA, and have been reading all the MATS, and other documents I can get my hands on (lots of info!).

Would someone please kindly make this possible?

Thanks for your help,

Well Hello There!

Hello there!
I thought I would quickly introduce myself and just make a quick hello to my fellow aviators!
This could sound so cocky but ah well, might as well make my hello!

Maybe a bit about myself outside of the virtual cockpit? OK

My name is Calum, I'm 14 and live in the UK!

Hobbies. What do I do? I am a keen fencer (the stabbing kind) and also enjoy refereeing Sunday league kids football - I am a qualified FA referee . I am also an audio snob. I do tech at school and do a little for a Scouting Theatre Production. Speaking of scouting, I am involved actively in it

I am a bit of a geek at heart and enjoy anything relating to computing and technology. Here is my current setup:

Intel Core i5 CPU 3rd Gen
8GB RAM
1GB nVidia Graphics Card
2 Monitor Setup
Running Windows 7 Ultimate

Behringer Xenyx 2442USB
MXL 990 Cardioid Microphone

iPad 4th Gen for Skype and Stuff

I am also a big gamer. I mostly play Call of Duty (specifically Black Ops 2 at the moment) and I use the Xbox 360. I am not a fanboy. Lets get that clear. I am happy to criticize Xbox and any company in general. I use the Xbox for its early release dates for DLC's, games and reliable XBOX Live service.

Inside of the cockpit, I have been flying using FSX since about the age of 11. Upon Gamespy closing, I took a break as flying by myself with just the sound of the automated ATC can get pretty annoying and boring. I have been told time and time again to join VATSIM by friends but always found the setup difficult. I thought screw it. I'll read everything, sign up and here I am!

I am looking to be a controller at Gatwick (SERTS) and have passed my theory and am awaiting a message regarding that! I hope to become a pilot later on too!

Anyway, I won't bore you anymore, nice to be here and I hope to meet some awesome people!

It's just over 4 yrs ago that AVSIM was hacked and we all thought that they by their own admission would not come back. Just read a very detailed post on the AVSIM forum which is full of the detail of what happened and who the attacker was.
I was somewhat surprised to find out the hacker was from the UK.

First Training Session

Hi Guys,
Well I have finally got around to finding some time for my first training session on GND, and was wondering if anyone had any tips to help me not make a complete fool of myself also just wanted to say a quick thanks to James Mack for picking up my first session for next week .

I have managed to get ES set up using the SERTS controller pack and have observed a few sessions on EGKK GND (thanks to those I watched for letting me spy on you while you where controlling!) and I do have a few questions already which I'm sure will be answered in my mentoring session but I thought I would ask here too!

On the SMD file for EGKK the taxiway hold points and gates are all marked however there are no taxiway markings, is this normal? Currently I'm using a printed copy of the aerodrome chart to allow me to identify the different taxiways but is this how everyone else does things or is there a way to get the taxiway markings / labels on the ES display?

That's all for now but I'm sure I will have more questions as i get into controlling

See you all soon

Hi all,

I controlled at EGSS a year and a half or so ago, unfortunately life outside Vatsim got quite busy and i've been meaning to put some time back into becoming a controller again as it was great fun.

From memory, i was well on my way to S2, but would most likely have to start from (near-ish) the beginning, or at minimum some refreshment time.

It looks like i've also been removed from the Essex RTS. If possible i'd like to go back to Stansted as it's what i'm most familiar with.

Just wondering if someone could recommend best course of action going forward, cheers!

Hello all,

California Airlines VA are having a Fly-In on Sunday, 26th May, at 1500z, departing Newcastle for Paris CDG. Would it be possible to have any ATC out of EGNT for the departure, and possibly en-route as well. Also, I cannot get in touch with anyone from VATFrance, so if you know anyone that could provide ATC for the arrival, please could you let them know and ask the same question. For the flight, we currently have 5 definite pilots, however, a few more may turn up on the day.
Many thanks,

For our thirteenth OverNighter long haul event, we will be flying a somewhat shorter overnight service out of London, heading for the Jewel of the Middle East - Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The BA105 service departs London at around 9:30pm UK time, climbing out over Western Europe for the seven hour haul through the darkness to arrive in time for an early breakfast in that amazing oasis in the sand that is Dubai in the UAE!

Our pilots will takeoff from Heathrow under full Air Traffic Control, online with VATSIM, with scheduled departures beginning at 20:00z (21:00 UK time). As with other OverNighter events, there will be slotted departures for three hours with the last departure scheduled for 23:00z (midnight UK time). All being well, flights will arrive into Dubai, again under full Air Traffic Control, some seven hours later as the sun begins to rise over the desert.

Departure slots will be available for booking by BAV pilots from 20:00z until 23:00z on the day of departure on the VATSIM on-line flying network to allow our pilots to fly the trip online and gain the flight hours for the flight on their roster. British Airways Virtual pilots will depart London Heathrow Airport on the evening of Saturday 25th MAY 2013 having booked one of the 37 available departure slots scheduled over the three-hour time window of the Event. ATC will be provided on VATSIM for the departure out of Heathrow by VATSIM UK.	In addition, ATC will be provided on VATSIM for the arrival into Dubai some seven hours later by the newly created VATSIM Emirates Division.

Will we all make it? Can we all stay alert through seven hours of darkness and into the early hours to make a safe landing at the end? How many of you can rise to the challenge?
We'll see what happens ........

Thank you for your attention.

As most of your are aware FSC Weston is looming on the doorstep and I think we're all quite excited, either that or Alex J has had far too much Lucozade. Now, it has been suggested that we market ourselves a bit more on the VATSIM network (no, not in that way Bradley) in preparation for Weston by way of achieving at least one Iron Mic.

I can already see quite a few bookings for next week which is really pleasing to see, however, if I may provide some encouragement and ask that as many people control as possible and try and achieve an Iron Mic that would be wonderful. It will probably help blow the cobwebs away as well and remind you of some of fantastic procedures in the South West, whilst preparing you to wow Joe Public with your outrageous amount of knowledge and nerdyness.

Additionally, if you think you've forgotten a procedure and can't find it in a VMATs, CAP493 or VatUK website, then send us a quick message using the link in my signature and we'll explain it in the best way possible, giving examples where appropriate, etc. And please don't be afraid to do this as the last thing we want is for you to turn up to Weston and feel embarrassed in front of everyone because you have forgotten something.

There will be an exam on Gatwick Tower (EGKK_TWR) on Wednesday commencing at 1830Z (7.30pm local time).

A good supply of VFR and IFR traffic, both inbound and outbound, will be required to complete the exam.

Supporting ATC from APP and London would also be much appreciated.

Please fly or control to support the exam if you can. As always, no funny business without permission from EGKK_X_TWR.

I look forward to seeing you all there.

Introductions

As most of you are probably aware by now, at the end of last week I was appointed the as the new South West RTS Manager.
I have had a couple of busy days learning the ropes and familiarising myself with the new systems, and so now I thought it was about time I say hello from my official capacity.

Over the next few weeks I intend to speak to everyone who is currently involved with the RTS in one way or another, finding out where you are in terms of training (if applicable), what you like about the way things are at the moment, what you don’t like and what you would like to see happen short or long term in the RTS.

So, what is next for the RTS? Well, I understand that this is a subject that is being widely talked about at the moment. Please rest assured that the RTS as a whole is not going to change, short or long term.

One of the biggest issues that I am aware of within the RTS is the mentor to student ratio. My plan to correct this initially is by utilising current mentor capacity and in coordination with the ATC training department, to conduct group sessions. Using this method I hope to be able to give each student a group mentoring session once a fortnight, dependant on mentor availability. Independent of these group sessions students will still receive individual sessions, which I hope will also be conducted once a fortnight. Members who have completed their training will be invited to the group sessions should they wish to update their knowledge.

The greatly talked about 'South West Controller Pack' is also high on my list of things I would like to address; I am aware that there currently isn't a standard setup that new members can download, open Euroscope and be ready to control with, some setup is still required. I am due to speak to the relevant individuals about the progress of the pack later this week and from then I will know how long it will take to finish.

Next up... Events, events, events!! There are a large number events that run with a great deal of traffic in the UK on an annual basis and the South West RTS has a share of this with a resounding success on each occasion - of course the upcoming FSC Weston is a perfect example of this (I'll come back to the details of this next). Here in the South West, we have some very interesting airports with unusual procedures and when combined with our friendly and knowledgable controllers, I know we can increase the the awareness of these stunning characteristics and promote just how great we are. Of course the secondary effects this is to increase the overall traffic levels that controllers experience on a day to day basis.
The controllers of Gatwick have shown that by significantly manning the airport at peak times they can generate a constant flow of medium to high traffic levels for their controllers to enjoy. Yesterday (Monday) was a perfect example that if you man the airport aircraft will come, however, I have noticed that we do not receive a lot a traffic from other countries like we used to and this is a market that I would like to target with our events. I'm not talking big events that go on for a whole day and require a huge amount of planning; I'm talking about for example a small 'city hopper' - why not fly your new amazing Dash 8 from Bristol to Charles de Gaulle one evening and enjoy full enroute ATC the whole way? And yes before you ask this is a real world route operated by Flybe (I've done my homework). This is just one example, we could even arrange a VFR experience night between the channel islands and somewhere just off the northern coast of France or Belgium. In terms of frequency I wouldn't be looking to do this very often, maybe three or four times a year - I'd be more than happy to organise more if you wanted.

I would just like to say a quick word about FSC Weston while I have your attention. This is, in my opinion, one of the most important events on the Vatsim calendar as it is one of very few events where members of the public get to see 'the other chap' do his thing and the best bit is they left us in charge of running the whole thing!
We are representing the Vatsim network and every year that we attend we have done a stunning job, this year is going to be no exception as a result of Bradley and Callum's hard work in particular. So although I am happy for anyone to come to me with any questions you may have, and I have been briefed on a couple of things so I should be able to help, this is their show and ultimately I'm just there to look pretty (their words not mine).

One final note, I would just like to say that I like to think of myself as a very approachable person. If you have a problem, want to let off steam or have just had a really boring day at work and want to tell someone about it, I'm all ears! The best way to get hold of me is using the link in my forum signature as I will get notifications on my phone and will be able to respond as soon as I can. Obviously if I'm in Teamspeak then just grab me or send me a message saying you want a chat and I'll come and speak to you as soon as I can.
I don't want to dwell on this point, but I would also like to say that in light of recent events I would like to run an open RTS where any major changes that I am looking to make, where possible, will be asked to the members for their opinion first, after all it is your RTS!

And... If you haven't heard yet, we do have a twitter feed, it's @southwestrts. So feel free to follow and tweet us!

Reinstall Horizon in seconds

We've all been there, wanting to do a fresh FSX install/reinstall and being totally put off by the thought of feeding in a big stack of Horizon scenery DVDs or manually adding hundreds of Areas to Scenery Library. Well, you don't have to, this takes seconds to reinstall the whole lot. I recently did this for my laptop to take to Weston FSC and completed the job in less than half a cup of coffee.

All you need is a backup copy of your Horizon Simulation folder with the all the installed files in it. Yes it's a HUGE folder but can easily be dumped onto an external HDD or put on a NAS drive. Just a straight copy of your existing one (assuming you have one!). Put your copy of it wherever you want to on your HDD's, mine's on my D:\ drive with the rest of FSX stuff on C:\ having copied it from my NAS to the laptop. Yeah, ok that bit takes a while but you can cut the grass while it copies.

Then you need a copy of Scenery Config Editor, a free utility http://fs-sceditor.sourceforge.net/ . If you've never used this then you don't know what you're missing, it basically takes all the hard work out of editing your scenery.cfg allowing you to use drag'n'drop for groups of files when re-ordering your scenery library. It also identifies any errors therein, dupe layer numbers, dupe file names etc etc.

The wonderful trick with Scenery Config Editor and Horizon is that SCE contains a tool called "Generate from Directory", you just point it at each Horizon volume's top level folder i.e. Vol1, Vol2 and Vol3 in my case. It will then find all the subfolders with Scenery & Texture in them and instantly create the hundreds of required entries for scenery.cfg. Once you've done that you can drag'n'drop everything to put it all in the correct order and that's it.

Job done. Happy Camper

Practical Suggestion - contentious content

A thought....

Whilst the onus is on the author to decide if content is suitable there are always going to be some types of videos or other media that might upset someone for a variety of reasons, particularly where "shock value" is a factor. In such cases the text you write around the media partly sets the perception of the audience.

Our forum software contains many useful features, some of which could perhaps assist us in these situations. The spoiler feature I particularly like. Whilst I cannot speak for the moderation team, I would imagine that if you wished to post something that could be taken in a negative way and you made use of features to protect the audience from shock value for an open discussion then you would stand a good chance of the post remaining in place...

As always, it is open to interpretation, but perhaps could be used by mods as well as members in "50/50" scenarios?

As an example: -

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I found this video on youtube about a very routine landing at EGBB of a 737. I thought the touchdown was ok but found the PA by the cabin crew to have a high pitch whistle that they should fix.
If you are easily shocked then please do not watch this video

Majestic Q400 and Holding Patterns - workaround

For those who don't read the Majestic forum a couple of us have been querying how this aircraft does (or rather doesn't) Hold properly, it's now confirmed as a buggette. I discovered a workaround which now appears to be the 'official' way around the problem.

What happens is when having setup a Hold it will, if it's done right, happily enter the Hold and then complete one lap. It then heads off out of the pattern on the inbound heading with a "leg extended" message. (There's another issue with it sometimes shooting off on a wrong heading, more on that at the end of this).

What you need to do for now is enter the Holding Fix into the Flight Plan page TWICE (the bug is that it should do that automagically when you define the Hold, it doesn't). You define the holding pattern on the SECOND entry of the fix so a simple FP I've tested is EGGD BRI EGGD. If you want to Hold at the BRI you enter the FP as EGGD BRI BRI EGGD and define the Hold on the second BRI. Once the Hold is Armed you should ensure your NAV page now shows From: EGGD To: BRI Nx: HOLD. Once in the Hold it will change to From: BRI To: HOLD Nx: HOLD and will stay in the pattern for as long as you want it to. Job done. The same workaround applies to longer FP's so if you're on a Stira1A into EGPF and expecting a Stira Hold you would enter STIRA twice in the FMC and define the hold on the second instance.

The second issue is related to the definition of the Hold. It doesn't at all like you setting 1 minute legs, you'll note the default is a Distance of 5 miles. Using the above example and setting 1 minute legs instead of a distance then it may start it's first outbound turn but never complete it and head off on a heading of 000/360. This doesn't happen every time but quite often it does and it can't be trusted! I've found that using the default Distance will always achieve a complete pattern albeit it a slightly bigger pattern than normal. Having resolved the first problem of it only doing one lap I'm now testing how sensitive that Distance or Time setting is and whether shorter distances can be used to try and get closer to a normal sized hold. In the meantime leaving it at the default 5 miles will achieve a successful hold should you need it.

Hope this helps!

Only on VATSIM

So after spending a few nights earlier in the week learning the Feelthere ERJ 145 I thought I'd do a flight on VATSIM, From LSGG to EGGD as Bristol is where I like to fly a lot, especially when learning something new.

Was a bit gutted when I saw approach and tower disappear not long into my flight but then halfway through a mentoring session came to life and also 4 hawks came along and started flying circuits. I tuned early to let Jordan (TWR) know I was coming in on BRI1C for a ILS RW27 approach and he handled it like a pro. Flew my arrival and approach whilst the guys in the hawks were vectored around and landed nicely although still got to get that landing sussed right, it's not a P51 or Citation X!

Only VATSIM can give you that unexpected experience with real people flying about and it made for an awesome end to the flight, so thanks guys for a great evening from an appreciative pilot.

Seen this a few days ago and found it rather interesting:

''THE A320 PILOT reports descending on final descent into Glasgow, operating under IFR in VMC with a RCS from Glasgow APP. The landing lights were selected on, as was the SSR transponder with Modes A, C and S; the ac was fitted with an ACAS. Passing altitude 4000ft (QNH 1015hPa), in clear conditions with the sun behind them, both he and the PNF saw an object ‘loom ahead’ at a range of about 100m. The object passed directly beneath before either of the crew had time to take avoiding action or had ‘really registered it’ although they were both agreed that it appeared blue and yellow (or silver) in colour with a small frontal area but that it was ‘bigger than a balloon’. The estimated mis-distance was 300ft.
The website Rocketroute provides a basic version that is for free. Here are also many charts from the UK AIP, Civil Aviation Authority AMDT 12/12.

And who signed up is activated for 14 days in the "pro version". There you will find a flight-planning-tool wich is really good; with flightplanns validated by Euro Control, including any ammendments, Quadrantal rule (Grosbritanien) Semicircular / hemispheric rule and RVSM.
Look here: EGLL-LSZH: DVR UL9 KONAN UL607 REMBA UM624 DIK UN852 493123N0062130E/N0450F200 UN852 SUTAL/N0450F190 N852 GTQ V17 LUPEN/N0450F230 Y711 NATOR T723 RILAX

Training Update

Hey Guys,

Not had an update from me for awhile so I thought it about time to fill you in with whats happening training wise.

There were 41 mentoring sessions over March and April and whilst no student was forwarded for a pre-exam many are making excellent progress. My thanks to the mentors for their continued efforts.

The training places were reviewed in the second week of April to as follows:

Stansted Tower: 5 Places
Essex Radar: 3 Places
Luton Tower: 3 Places

If you were given a training place then you should have received an email from me. Please also email me with any comments that you have. For instance if you are going to be unavailable for a month then let me know and your training place can be shared with someone else.

Whilst many students are making good progress I would ask that you keep your availability up as much as possible. We do have a good number of mentors now and what I am seeing is students getting very near pre exam stage and then disappear for a month. Perfectly understandable as this is a hobby but I just wanted to make sure you understand that it will effect your progress as we will have to go over a few things again and get you back up to speed with handling large amounts of traffic.

My thanks to Paul Williams for his Cheat Sheets and other resources that he has kindly produced for the RTS.

The new Luton vMATS is in the works and should be out in the not so distant future.

I would also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone undertaking Exams soon the very best of Luck.

That's it from me - any questions, comments, queries then please get in touch.

Cheers,

Transferable IVAO rating to VATSIM

Good afternoon ladies and gents.

Just a quick question regarding ATC ratings. I tried to open a ticket but having difficulties creating an account on the ticket system.

I am currently An aerodrome controller on the IVAO UK network, after having a practical exam and have been for over a year, and have gained over 300 hours.

I have links to validate this.

Is there anyway you can transfer your rating over to the vatsim network, or have some leeway on getting rated?

Cheers guys.
The Dreamliner looks so nice I'm just hoping it does the crew training at EMA (or is that just me been really biased ) first before it actually enters doing long haul flights from the 2nd week in July.

Free Speech

If you were ever in any doubt about the stifling of free speech on VATSIM, then you need no longer be following the lockdown of the recent topic "What now for the South-West?". Who felt they had the arbitrary right to hinder the broadcast of members' opinions? Who is afraid of vigorous discussion and the examination of policies that affect our hobby? This latest denial of free argument was precipitous in its appearance, discourteous to those who wished to add their opinions and reflects the very worst excesses of that type of mindset which George Orwell described as belonging to the Thought Police.

Why was the topic locked and what are you afraid of, whoever you are? You should be ashamed.

Monitor "Out Of Range"

Hi All,

Had a little problem develop completely out of the blue today.
I had to leave the computer briefly earlier and as I was turning off the monitors I knocked the "Image Auto Adjust" button..
This then resulted, after the adjustment had been completed, in an "Out Of Range" warning being displayed on a black screen on my second monitor.

I have no idea why the monitor won't now work. I can take the frequency down (23Hz is the only one other than 60 Windows allows), or the resolution down below native (1920x1080 is native) and the monitor will work, but at 60Hz and 1920x1080 resolution the monitor keeps telling me it is out of range.

I've tried swapping cables around, changing the graphics card outputs etc but to no avail. My primary monitor (which is an identical model to the secondary) works perfectly at native resolution in either GPU output.

Both my monitors are Viewsonic VA2413wm models.

Any thoughts?

Cheers in advance,
